ALLUVIAL SYSTEMS CONFINED IN NARROW INTRAMONTANE BASINS:
FROM SMALL ALLUVIAL FANS TO LOW-HIGH SINUOSITY RIVER IN MARSHY FLOODPLAIN

Leaders: Giorgio Basilici (University of Campinas, Brazil), Marco Benvenuti (Università di Firenze, Italy), Marcus Vinícius Theodoro Soares (University of Campinas, Brazil).

Description: Wines, salami and cheeses in the historic Etruscan, Roman and Middle Age cities and pleasant hilly landscapes across Toscana and Umbria will be just an intriguing aspect of this charming fieldtrip which will introduce you to the alluvial sedimentation in the Plio-Pleistocene intramontane basins of the Northern Apennines (Central Italy). We want to show and discuss the following aspects of alluvial sedimentation with you: (i) Non-conventional laterally-accreted barforms and other channel bedform indicative of seasonal river systems; (ii) Description and interpretation of cyclothemic fluvial successions in terms of Sequence Stratigraphy concepts (iii) Deposit/palaeosol cycles in muddy alluvial fan and interaction between alluvial fan and fluvial systems. (iv) Depositional and palaeopedogenic conditions for the preservation of a fossil forest in marginal lake swamp. (v) Downstream catenary development from well-drained to hydromorphic palaeosols. The excursion will go through the Valdelsa and Tiberino basins, two Plio-Quaternary hinterland basins formed during the late stage of a continental collision within an active orogenic belt facing the opening of the Tyrrhenian Basin. The purpose of this excursion is to discuss the large-scale forcing factors that control the accumulation and preservation of the fluvial sedimentary record.

Logistics/recommendations: The fieldtrip may be classified as a medium-low difficulty: short walk on dirt roads or paths for reaching the exposures. The accommodation, which includes dinner and breakfast and, if possible, swimming pool, is provided in local countryside hotels (agriturismo) that offer local meals and wines for a “sensorial” immersion in the Toscana and Umbria culture and food traditions. The organizers will prepare light lunch with local food. Given the seasonal period, we may find hot to very hot days, so take all personal precautions to protect from heat strokes and sun exposures.
